A divergent boundary is formed when two plates are pulling away from each other and new plate material is being formed. This often happens under the ocean but Iceland is an exception. As magma comes out of the gap it cools forming new continental material. As a result of this Iceland is gradually getting bigger. People living on a divergent boundary need to be careful of hot magma and the formation of new plates.
